Lathe Safety

Note: This document does not provide information about how to operate this machine. It only lists potential hazards associated with using the machine and safety practices. Before using the machine be sure to receive proper instruction on it's use.


Potential Hazards:

1. Entanglement in the moving stock

2. Detached stock or flying wood chips

3. Cutting tool knock-out

 

Safety Practices:

1. Be sure stock is free of paint, nails, grit, loose knots, or foreign materials and that it does not have any defects that could cause it to break when turning.

2. Be sure the stock is securely attached between the centers and that the tail stock is locked.

3. Be sure that faceplate turning are securely fastened to the faceplate.

4. Turn the stock by hand before turning on the power to check for clearance between the stock and machine parts.

5. Adjust the tool rest a close to the stock a possible, normally approximately 1/4 inch, and readjust the rest (with the power off) as the diameter of the stock is reduced.

6. Make sure you know how to perform the operation correctly.

7. Wear safety glasses at all times.

8. Roll-up long sleeves.

9. Do not wear dangling articles.

10. Secure long hair.

11. Run all stock at a low speed until it is rounded.

12. Run large stock at lower speeds.

13. Hold the cutting tool firmly on the tool rest with both hands.

14. Remove the tool rest for sanding and finishing operations.
