Finishing Material Safety Note: This document does not provide information about how to apply finishing materials. It only lists potential hazards associated with finishing and associated safety practices. Before using finishing materials be sure to receive proper instruction in their use.
Many finishing materials contain hazardous materials and are flammable, therefore caution must be used when using them.
Potential hazards:
- Eye damage from toxic chemicals
- Skin irritation from toxic chemicals
- Poisoning from ingested chemicals
- Poisoning from fumes
- Fire
Safety practices:
- Read instructions before using any finishing materials or solvents and follow instructions exactly
- Wear eye protection
- Wear a respirator when using very toxic materials or when spraying materials
- Wear protective gloves to minimize skin contact
- Wash your hands thoroughly after using solvents and finishing materials
- Do not rub your eyes or touch your mouth when using finishing materials
- Store materials in approved containers and storage areas
- Keep all finishing materials away from flame, sparks, and heat
- Close containers tightly after use
- Store materials in clearly marked containers
- Store used rags in a fireproof container
- Dispose of materials in approved containers
- Work in well ventilated areas
- Make sure fire extinguishers are available
